Does your perfect career vision include making a real difference in the life of a child?

Ensuring that every student achieves optimal growth and success throughout their school years requires a diverse team of specialized professionals. In the case of students with behavioral challenges, RBTs – registered behavior technicians – are vital members of that team. These paraprofessionals collaborate with teachers, aides, special educators and other colleagues, implementing behavior intervention plans, collecting and recording data, monitoring student progress, and playing an integral role in developing supportive learning environments.

The Unique Role of RBTs in Schools

Learning can be particularly challenging for students with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) or other developmental challenges, as well as those who face intellectual disabilities or mental health and other behavior barriers. RBTs play a unique role in addressing these individuals’ needs throughout the school day and as they progress over the years.

Here’s a snapshot of the responsibilities of a school-based RBT:

  • Supporting students in the implementation of behavior intervention plans (BIPs) developed  by board-certified behavior analysts (BCBAs).
  • Collecting data on student performance and progress to ensure that BIPs are effective and that interventions are tailored to each individual’s specific needs.
  • Helping students develop social and communication skills so they can interact with others, express their needs, participate in group activities, and become more engaged in their school community.
  • Assisting students with transitions like moving between activities or classrooms.
  • Helping develop students’ independent living skills, including self-care, organization, and problem-solving, as well as self-regulation techniques to manage emotions and behavior.

Typical RBT Salaries

The national average annual salary for RBTs in the United States is approximately $37,000 to $45,000. However, this range can vary based on years of experience, level of education, certifications earned, and geographic location. For instance:
