Good news is good. Bad news is bad.

But, not knowing, when you’re waiting for something as important as a job offer? There’s nothing worse.

If you’ve applied for a position – and maybe even had an interview or two – and the employer has been unresponsive to date, all may not be lost.

Don’t underestimate your value.

Job hunting is a two-way street, and you deserve an answer just as much as a potential employer deserves to have you on their team. But at the same time, respect the possibility that hiring managers are often swamped with work, and other factors may be standing in their way of giving you an answer.

Here are five factors that may delay a job offer:

  1. Incomplete References

Never underestimate the importance of professional references in your job search. They validate your abilities and character, help corroborate the information on your resume, and can provide invaluable insights into your skills, accomplishments, and work ethic. They may provide the added assurance employers need to make an informed decision whether to hire you or another leading contender.

  1. Slow Credential Submission

Bureaucratic processes and credential verification can significantly slow job offer review. Especially with larger companies, there may be lengthy chains of approval. Or, regardless of an employer’s size, you may have to out wait rigid hiring policies.

  • Do whatever you can to ensure all your credentials are up to date and clearly communicated to potential employers. Then, be patient as processes are completed.
  1. Missed Calls From Your Recruiter

Like your list of references and credential updates, this one is on you. Staying in touch with your recruiter throughout your job search is crucial for many reasons including access to exclusive, often unadvertised opportunities; personalized advice; ongoing feedback, and solidifying the foundation for an ongoing relationship.

  • The bottom line: Keeping in regular touch with your recruiter often helps convert your application into an interview, and your interview into an offer.
  1. Budget Approval

In a perfect world, hiring managers have final, watertight approval of their headcount budgets before they start – or proceed with – their hiring process. But the reality is: sometimes, a company’s financial picture changes or a CFO or HR manager’s estimate is off.  They still owe you an answer … but you may be caught in the middle of such a scenario.

  1. Hiring Manager Work Overload

In this scenario, an employer has no intention of rejecting you, but they simply haven’t made a final decision yet. Ideally, they should keep in touch with you to keep you informed, but often, they are overworked and may fall short. It’s not ideal, but it does happen.
