October Report Showing Healthcare Job Gains

The U.S. is still on the road to recovery from the economic impact of COVID-19. Due to the restrictions placed on non-essential medical procedures during the spring of 2020, even some healthcare jobs were lost. Now that some limitations have been lifted, the healthcare industry is experiencing one of the fastest rebounds from the negative effects of the pandemic. Those who lost healthcare jobs are now able to get back to work, and employment numbers are trending back up.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics October 2020 Jobs Report shows some promising statistics for healthcare workers. The healthcare industry gained more than 107,000 jobs last month, which represents the third-highest gains among the 15 major industries in the U.S.

At Covelo Group, we’ve seen hundreds of healthcare jobs open up around the country in recent months. Our hospital partners are struggling to fill essential allied health and environmental services positions, so they call on us to help them find the right people.

We’re currently seeing a particularly high demand for environmental services (EVS) professionals, food service staff, and medical assistants (MAs). We are filling these positions every day, matching candidates with hospital jobs in major cities like Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago, and Washington, D.C.

EVS Tech

Hospital environmental services techs, commonly referred to as custodians or janitorial staff, are vital to keeping hospitals running safely and smoothly. They serve a critical role in protecting patients and healthcare providers against infection. The proper function of any hospital depends on EVS teams implementing proper cleaning and sanitizing methods throughout every area of the facility.

Food Service Worker

Hospital food services staff cook and prepare the meals served to patients and employees. They ensure the menu has healthy options for patients with dietary restrictions. Dietary aides help patients order meals that will best support their recovery and deliver those meals throughout the day.

Medical Assistant

The main function of the MA is to perform important tasks to allow clinical staff to treat more patients. MAs are responsible for collecting vitals and recording pertinent medical history from each patient. They also manage the patient flow from the waiting room, prepare treatment rooms, and organize necessary supplies for physicians. MAs sometimes perform routine labs and submit prescription refills under the direction of a physician. They may also be required to perform office-related tasks such as filing and answering phones.

Opportunity for Growth

Entry-level hospital jobs such as these offer tremendous opportunities for growth. Advancement may look like a supervisory role within the department or a new opportunity elsewhere in the hospital system.

These jobs are also ideal positions to gain valuable hospital experience while pursuing higher education. Many nursing schools, for instance, require some hospital experience before you even apply to the program. Flexible hours and competitive pay make balancing both work and education a manageable goal.
